Director, Mental Health Center, CU
Chittagong University has appointed Professor Dr. Nurul Islam as Director of the Mental Health Center. The Department’s teachers and students congratulate Dr. Islam and the team for establishing the Mental Health Center at the university, as well as the Vice-Chancellor (VC).
This is truly a remarkable achievement by the psychology department. Since its inception, the Psychology Department has been providing psychological services informally. Counseling services began prior to the establishment of the Mental Health Center at Chittaong University’s Medical Center. It should be noted that mental health services were first established within the medical center in 2017 with the assistance of faculty members from the psychology department. Unfortunately, that initiative was short-lived and ended a few months later due to the university administration’s refusal to cooperate.
Following the July revulation, the newly appointed VC took the initiative to provide mental health services to the medical center. Following discussions with the senior faculty of the psychology department, the current CU administration initially began counseling services through the medical center with the assistance of the psychology department and promised to establish a full-fledged mental health center on university grounds.
Today, January 21, 2025, the CU administration established the Mental Health Center and appointed a director. Counseling at this university will now fall under the purview of the newly established mental health center. In addition to counseling services, the mental health center will soon organize more mental health service activities for students, including awareness campaigns, seminars, and symposiums.
